Solar AMC Cost in Tamil Nadu: What's Included and Is It Worth It?

Quick answer: A residential solar AMC (annual maintenance contract) in Tamil Nadu typically costs ₹2,500–₹6,000 a year for a 3–5 kW home system. Commercial and industrial contracts usually run ₹300–₹800 per kW per year, depending on cleaning frequency. If your system was installed under PM Surya Ghar, you shouldn't pay for AMC in the first five years. The scheme requires the empanelled vendor to provide five years of comprehensive maintenance from commissioning. After year five, an AMC is worth it mainly if you can't clean the panels yourself or the system is large enough that a few lost percent costs real money.

First: Check What You Already Have

Under PM Surya Ghar, the model agreement between consumer and vendor puts five years of comprehensive operation and maintenance on the vendor, starting from commissioning. That covers repairs, wear and tear, and periodic health checks of the system. REC's vendor guidelines say the same: free repair and maintenance for at least five years.

If an installer tries to sell you a paid AMC on top of a PM Surya Ghar installation in years 1–5, ask what it covers that the scheme doesn't. Usually the honest answer is "more frequent cleaning visits". That can be worth paying for, but it isn't a repair or warranty contract.

Separately, your panels carry a manufacturer's product warranty (typically 10–12 years) and performance warranty (25–30 years), and your inverter usually has 5–10 years. Those are manufacturer obligations, not AMC. See solar panel warranties explained.

Typical AMC Pricing in Tamil Nadu

SystemBasic AMC (inspection + 2–4 cleanings/yr)Comprehensive AMC (adds monthly cleaning, priority repair)
    3 kW home₹2,500–₹4,000/yr₹5,000–₹8,000/yr
    5 kW home₹3,500–₹6,000/yr₹7,000–₹11,000/yr
    10 kW home / small shop₹5,000–₹9,000/yr₹10,000–₹16,000/yr
    50–100 kW commercial₹300–₹500/kW/yr₹500–₹800/kW/yr
    500 kW+ industrial₹250–₹400/kW/yrUsually custom, with generation guarantee

Indicative November 2026 market ranges. The biggest price driver is cleaning frequency. Coastal and dusty industrial sites (Tirupur, Sivakasi, cement belts) need more visits, so they cost more.

What a Good AMC Must Include

If it isn't written in the contract, assume it isn't covered.

    Every visit:

    • Panel cleaning with soft water or RO water, not borewell water. See hard-water cleaning damage.
    • Visual check for cracked glass, hot spots, bird droppings and loose clamps.
    • Inverter error log and generation check against expected output.

    At least once a year:

    • Earth resistance test on each earth pit, with readings recorded. See lightning arrester and earthing.
    • DC string voltage and current (IV) check to catch a failing panel or connector.
    • Torque check on structure bolts and module clamps, especially before monsoon.
    • SPD and MCB inspection in the ACDB and DCDB.
    • Thermal scan for commercial systems above about 50 kW. Hot connectors cause rooftop fires; see fire safety standards.

    In the contract terms:

    • Response time for breakdowns (48 hours for homes, 24 hours for commercial is reasonable).
    • Whether parts are included or only labour.
    • Who handles warranty claims with the panel and inverter manufacturers.
    • A written service report after each visit.

    Is AMC Worth It?

Years 1–5 on a PM Surya Ghar install: Usually not. The vendor already owes you maintenance. Pay only for extra cleaning if you can't do it yourself.

Year 6 onward, home system: Do the math. A 3 kW system saves about ₹25,000–₹30,000 a year (see 3 kW vs 5 kW vs 10 kW). Dirty panels typically lose 5–10% across a dry season, about ₹1,500–₹3,000 a year. A ₹3,000 basic AMC roughly breaks even on cleaning alone. The real value is the annual earthing, SPD and connector checks, which catch the faults that kill inverters or start fires.

Skip it if you or a family member can safely clean the panels monthly, check the inverter app weekly, and you're prepared to book an annual electrical check separately. Our annual maintenance checklist shows what to look for.

Commercial and industrial: Almost always worth it. On a 100 kW factory system saving ₹7–₹9 per unit, a 5% generation loss is ₹55,000–₹70,000 a year, far more than the AMC. Insist on monthly generation reports and a performance clause.

Red Flags in an AMC Quote

    • "Unlimited cleaning" with no frequency written down.
    • Labour only, with every SPD, fuse and connector billed extra at the vendor's price.
    • No earthing test or IV check, just washing.
    • Multi-year prepayment from a company you can't verify. If they shut down, your money goes with them. See national brands vs local experts.
    • Voiding manufacturer warranty. An AMC can't override panel or inverter warranties. Be wary of any contract that says otherwise.

    FAQ

What is the AMC cost for a solar system in Tamil Nadu?

For a 3–5 kW home system, a basic AMC with inspection and two to four cleanings a year costs about ₹2,500–₹6,000 a year. Comprehensive AMCs with monthly cleaning cost roughly ₹5,000–₹11,000. Commercial systems are usually priced at ₹300–₹800 per kW per year.

Is maintenance free under PM Surya Ghar?

Yes, for five years. The PM Surya Ghar consumer–vendor agreement makes the empanelled vendor responsible for comprehensive operation and maintenance for five years from commissioning, including repairs and wear and tear. Keep your vendor's contact details and the agreement copy.

What does a solar AMC include?

A good AMC includes scheduled panel cleaning, inverter and generation checks, an annual earth resistance test, DC string checks, structure torque checks, SPD and breaker inspection, and a written report after each visit. Confirm in writing whether spare parts are included.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Tamil Nadu?

Every two to four weeks during the dry months (January–May), and less often during the monsoon, when rain does part of the job. Coastal and industrial-dust sites may need weekly cleaning. See our solar panel cleaning guide.

Can I maintain my solar system myself instead of an AMC?

Yes, for cleaning and monitoring. Use soft water and a soft brush, never a pressure washer or abrasive pad, and clean early morning when panels are cool. Leave earthing tests, DC electrical checks and inverter faults to a qualified technician.
