Quick answer: An elevated solar structure raises the panels on steel columns, usually 6–10 feet above the terrace slab, so the space underneath stays usable for drying clothes, water-tank access, small gatherings or a shaded sit-out. Expect it to add roughly ₹6,000–₹12,000 per kW over a standard low-rise structure, depending on height and steel section. The PM Surya Ghar and G.O. 102 subsidies don't increase for elevated structures, so the extra cost is yours. It has to be designed for your city's wind speed. Chennai's design wind speed is much higher than Coimbatore's.
Why Tamil Nadu Homes Ask for This
Most Tamil Nadu homes have flat RCC terraces used every day: drying clothes and vathal, Pongal kolams, kids playing, the occasional family function. A standard solar structure sits about 1–2 feet off the slab and takes over 300 sq ft for a 3 kW system. Many families say no to solar for this reason alone.
An elevated structure fixes that, and has three other benefits:
- Less parapet and tank shading. Raising panels above the parapet wall and overhead tank often removes the morning and evening shading that cuts daily generation.
- Cooler roof below. The array shades the slab, which typically lowers top-floor room temperatures in April–May.
- Easier waterproofing access. You can re-treat the terrace without dismantling the array.
Height Options
| Type | Lowest edge height | Best for | Indicative extra cost over standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (low-rise) | 1–2 ft | Unused terraces | — |
| Semi-elevated | 4–5 ft | Clothes drying, crawl-free cleaning under panels | ₹4,000–₹7,000 per kW |
| Elevated | 6–8 ft | Walk-under use, sit-out | ₹6,000–₹10,000 per kW |
| High-elevated | 9–10 ft+ | Clearing tanks and staircase heads, functions | ₹9,000–₹12,000+ per kW |
Indicative, for hot-dip galvanised steel on an RCC slab. Taller structures need heavier columns, bracing and bigger base plates, so cost rises faster than height.
On a 3 kW system, a 7-foot elevated structure typically adds ₹20,000–₹30,000. Against the combined ₹1,00,000 subsidy and a roughly three-year payback (see 3 kW vs 5 kW vs 10 kW), that adds about a year to payback. Most families who use their terrace think that's worth it.
Wind Is the Real Design Problem
Lift a 3 kW array to 8 feet and you've built a 300 sq ft sail on stilts. The structure has to resist uplift at the design wind speed for your location under IS 875 (Part 3):
| City / region | Basic wind speed (IS 875 Pt 3) |
|---|---|
| Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam coast | 50 m/s |
| Tiruchirappalli | 47 m/s |
| Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Erode | 39 m/s |
Wind load rises with the square of wind speed, so a coastal Chennai structure has to resist about 1.6× the force of the same structure in Coimbatore. A design copied from a Coimbatore job is under-built for Chennai. See solar during cyclone season for what failures look like.
Ask the installer for:
- Structural drawing and load calculation that names the wind speed used. No drawing, no deal.
- Steel section sizes: column, rafter and purlin dimensions and thickness. Elevated structures typically use 2.5–3 mm or heavier sections, not the 1.6–2 mm common in low-rise kits.
- Hot-dip galvanising, typically 80 microns minimum. Painted mild steel rusts within a few monsoons, especially near the coast.
- Anchoring method. Chemical anchors or anchor bolts into the slab or beam, with base plates sized for the uplift, not just a few expansion bolts.
- Bracing in both directions. A tall structure without diagonal bracing sways.
Will My Terrace Take It?
A typical rooftop array adds about 15–20 kg per sq m including panels and structure, well within the capacity of a normal residential RCC slab. Elevated structures put that load on fewer, more concentrated points, so:
- Land columns on beams or columns below where possible, not the middle of a slab span.
- Older or cracked slabs (25+ years, visible rust stains or spalling) need a structural check first.
- Don't build on a weathering course or brick-bat coba without anchoring through to the slab.
Waterproofing: Do It First
Every anchor is a hole in your terrace. Do it in this order:
- Repair cracks and redo terrace waterproofing before installation, if it's due in the next 3–5 years.
- Seal each anchor with a compatible sealant and a pedestal or grout pad that sheds water.
- Keep base plates slightly raised so water doesn't pool around them.
Redoing waterproofing under a finished elevated array is possible, which is one of its benefits, but it's still easier before the steel goes up.
Approvals and Subsidy
- Subsidy: Elevated systems qualify for PM Surya Ghar and the G.O. 102 state top-up like any other grid-connected rooftop system, with the same amounts. The structure upgrade is not subsidised.
- Net metering: No difference. TANGEDCO inspects the electrical installation, not the structure height.
- Apartments and shared terraces: Get written consent from co-owners or the association before building anything tall. See solar for apartments.
- Building rules: Very tall structures, or any that create an enclosed "room", may draw objections in some local bodies. Keep it open-sided and check with your installer if you're planning 10 feet or more.
FAQ
What is the cost of an elevated solar structure in Tamil Nadu?
An elevated structure typically adds ₹6,000–₹12,000 per kW over a standard structure, depending on height and steel section. For a 3 kW system at 6–8 feet, budget roughly ₹20,000–₹30,000 extra. The subsidy amount doesn't change.
What is the ideal height for an elevated solar structure?
For most homes, 7–8 feet at the lowest edge allows comfortable walking and clothes-drying underneath without excessive wind load. Go higher only to clear an overhead tank or staircase head-room that would otherwise shade the panels.
Is an elevated solar structure safe during cyclones?
Yes, if it's designed for your location's IS 875 wind speed, hot-dip galvanised, braced and properly anchored. Chennai and coastal districts need a heavier design than Coimbatore or Madurai. Always ask for the structural drawing and the design wind speed used.
Can I get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy with an elevated structure?
Yes. Elevated grid-connected rooftop systems are eligible for the same PM Surya Ghar subsidy and Tamil Nadu G.O. 102 top-up as standard installations. The extra structure cost isn't subsidised.
Will an elevated structure damage my terrace waterproofing?
Not if anchors are sealed properly and waterproofing is done before installation. Elevated structures actually make later waterproofing easier, since you can work under the array without removing it.
