Quick answer: Rooftop solar works well on metal sheet roofs: factories, warehouses, workshops and many newer homes' upper floors. Panels are fixed with short rails or rail-less clamps screwed into the purlins, sealed with EPDM washers, and the added load is only about 12–16 kg per sq m. Mangalore tile roofs are harder. Tiles crack under foot and don't take screws, so the usual answer is tile hooks fixed to the rafters under lifted tiles, or a separate elevated structure. Asbestos cement sheets should not be drilled or walked on. Use an independent structure or replace the sheet first.
Metal Sheet Roofs (Trapezoidal / Colour-Coated)
This is the most common roof in Tamil Nadu's industrial belts: Tirupur, Coimbatore, Sriperumbudur and Hosur. It's often the easiest roof for solar.
How it's mounted:
| Method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mini-rail / short rail | Short aluminium rails screwed into the sheet crests with self-drilling screws and EPDM-washers, into the purlin where possible | Most trapezoidal sheets |
| Rail-less clamps | Panel clamps fixed directly onto sheet crests | Large factory roofs (less material, faster install) |
| Standing-seam clamps | Clamp grips the seam, no drilling | Standing-seam / Kliplok-type roofs |
| Tilted frame | Raised rear legs to add tilt | Very low-slope roofs where you want better self-cleaning |
Checks before installing:
- Purlin spacing and condition. Panels should load the purlins, not just the sheet. Old purlins with rust at the joints need repair first.
- Sheet thickness. Thin sheets (under about 0.45 mm) may not hold screws well. Ask for a pull-out check.
- Sheet age. If the roof is due for replacement in the next 5–8 years, replace it before solar. Removing and refitting an array later costs ₹3,000–₹6,000 per kW.
- Skylights and ridge vents. Keep clear of them and plan walkways for cleaning.
- Roof slope and orientation. A south-facing slope is ideal. East-west split arrays are fine, with roughly 5–10% lower yield than due south.
Leak prevention: Every screw must go into a crest, not a valley, with an EPDM-bonded washer, tightened to compress the washer, not crush it. Ask for a written leak warranty on the mounting. Good installers give one.
Mangalore Tile Roofs
Common on older homes in Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, the Nilgiris, Karaikudi and village houses across the state. Tiles sit loose on wooden battens and rafters, are brittle, and can't be screwed into.
| Option | How | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Tile hooks | Lift tiles, fix stainless or aluminium hooks to the rafters, notch and refit tiles; rails sit on the hooks | Neat, but needs sound rafters; some tiles will break and need replacing |
| Replace tiles under the array with metal sheet | Swap the tile section for a colour-coated sheet, then mount as a metal roof | Most leak-resistant long term; changes the roof's look |
| Independent ground or elevated structure | Steel frame on its own footings beside or over the house | Zero load on the tiles; costs more; see ground mount vs rooftop and elevated structures |
Check the timber first. Rafters and battens in older homes often have termite or rot damage. A solar array adds steady load, and wind uplift pulls on every fixing. A carpenter's inspection is worth doing before any hooks go in.
Asbestos Cement (AC) Sheets
Many older factory sheds and some homes still have AC sheets.
- Don't drill, cut or walk on them. They're brittle, people have fallen through them, and drilling releases asbestos fibres, which are a serious health hazard.
- Best option: replace the roof section with metal sheet before installing solar, using a contractor who handles asbestos removal and disposal properly.
- Alternative: an independent steel structure spanning over the roof, supported on the building columns or its own footings, so nothing touches the sheets.
Load: Will the Roof Take It?
| Component | Typical weight |
|---|---|
| Panels | ~11–12 kg per sq m |
| Rails, clamps, fixings (sheet roof) | ~1.5–3 kg per sq m |
| Total added (sheet roof) | ~12–16 kg per sq m |
That's light, and most industrial sheds take it easily. Still have a structural engineer check the roof if any of these apply:
- The shed is older than about 20 years, or has had extensions added
- Purlins are visibly sagging or rusted
- You're also planning cleaning walkways or water lines on the roof
- It's a coastal site with design wind speeds around 50 m/s, such as Chennai or Cuddalore
Fire Safety and Access on Industrial Roofs
- Leave clear walkways and access paths for firefighting and cleaning.
- Use DC isolators close to the array and at the inverter.
- Keep DC cables in UV-rated conduit or trays, clipped to the structure, never loose on hot sheet surfaces.

FAQ
Can solar panels be installed on a metal sheet roof?
Yes. Metal sheet roofs are among the easiest to solarise. Panels are mounted on short rails or rail-less clamps screwed into the sheet crests and purlins with EPDM-sealed fasteners, or clamped onto standing seams without any drilling. Added load is about 12–16 kg per sq m.
Will solar panels cause leaks in a metal roof?
Not when fixed correctly: screws into the crests (never the valleys), with EPDM-bonded washers, tightened to the right compression. Ask your installer for a written leak warranty on the mounting work.
Can I install solar on a Mangalore tile roof?
Yes, with care. The usual methods are tile hooks fixed to sound rafters under lifted tiles, replacing the tiles under the array with metal sheet, or using an independent elevated or ground structure. Have the roof timber inspected for termite or rot first.
Is it safe to install solar on an asbestos roof?
Don't drill, cut or walk on asbestos cement sheets. Replace the roof section with metal sheet first, using a contractor who handles asbestos safely, or use an independent steel structure that doesn't touch the sheets.
Do metal-roof solar systems qualify for subsidy?
Residential grid-connected systems qualify for PM Surya Ghar and the Tamil Nadu G.O. 102 top-up regardless of roof type. Commercial and industrial systems don't get capital subsidy, but benefit from accelerated depreciation.
